7 Essential Writing Skills For Bloggers

Learn about the seven writing-related skills every blogger should master in order to write informative and engaging content, attract readers and provoke an on-going discussion, as well as maximize their potential without wasting any resources away.

Web writing and blogging skills arent always the same blogging requires more planning and more independence which is why bloggers should be more focused on their goals and use the written word accordingly.

Writing and Editing Skills
Your grammar and style may not be perfect (mine definitely arent!), but you can make sure your posts are well-formatted, free of glaring punctuation errors and logical mistakes in writing and presentation. Pick a topic and explore it in detail, but keep it focused use crosslinking to join different pieces of information and ensure clarity. Be versatile showcase different abilities by posting reviews, tutorials, guides, how-tos, opinion pieces, etc. Youre the editor-in-chief, the section editor, and the contributing writer all in one. Assume each of these roles in reverse order take your time to review your drafts and edit them before publishing, make sure each post is in line with your blogs focus, and take the secondary, possibly redundant information to another (potentially linked) blog post or off-site where you can link back to your blog. Manage your resources wisely whether its your own writing effort, link building strategies, or information you have to offer.

Strong SEO Copywriting Skills
The ability to produce keyword rich content and organize information around targeted keyword phrases, as well as knowledge of link building and basic blog typography are a must. Use lists, graphs, and well-formatted text to ensure clarity and readability. No blog will ever succeed without search engine optimization as its base writing strategy. Blog writers need to be aware of all the factors that condition their blogs traffic, popularity and authority in search engines in order to provide the most optimal content on their blogs.

Establishing Authority and Credibility
Be factual, up-to-date, and informative rely on research rather than opinion, provide links, stats, and screenshots to validate your point, present the results of your own experiment or inquiry, and edit your posts when the information becomes out-dated or inapplicable. You have to know how to write about what you know, but you also have to know how to write about what you dont know dont turn your posts in rants or speculations when you tackle little-known or yet unexplored subjects; instead, ask questions, pose challenges, and start meaningful discussions. Give a valid starting point, offer some data, a quotation, an opinion and an honest attempt at analyzing it. There is nothing you dont know about your niche there are simply lots of things you are learning every day and are willing to learn from others thats the kind of attitude that gives you the authority to inform, advise and educate your readers about what you already know.

Kicking the Writers Block
Bloggers need to deliver content regularly, or their blogs will fail. Save some posts as drafts so you can publish them when youre completely uninspired to write or simply busy with life. You can look at your latest posts in whichever category and see if theyd make for a quick round-up post to hit another string of keywords with it, to attract traffic from slightly different SE queries, etc. You can be a minimalist sometimes so long as you stay creative.

Finding Your Own Voice and Style
Whatever it is youre blogging about and however you choose to do it is entirely up to you. However, once you define your voice and style simply keep at it. Dont try to imitate others, dont copy other blogs or websites whether anyone notices or not, youll lose in the long run anyway if you concentrate on others instead of yourself. Blogging, even for monetary purposes, is about self-expression and doesnt exist outside of it.

Planning and Flexibility

Every blog both on-site and off-site is a web of related contents, or at least should be. The contents need to be frequently, but reasonably interlinked to constitute a certain wholeness of information, at an angle of your choice or to the extent your expertise allows you. Thats why you shouldnt stuff your posts with irrelevant or slightly off-topic information your content needs focus and the information youre giving should go further and further at moderate pace. Yes, your blog needs a plan of development and you need to follow it in order to build something of value, but you have to be flexible and creative in the process.

Communication and Networking
The ability to tweet, post comments, participate in discussions on forums, self-promote on social bookmarking sites, and bloggers networks is essential for every blogger. Blog writers need to be able to carry their words, information, links and products (whatever it is that theyre promoting) through multiple channels and communicate with other people no blog can exist without a rapidly growing following.
